1st Layer: Coarse Gravels
These gravels served as a drainage for excessive water that’s being watered into the terrarium. Too much water stay stagnant in the soil layer will lead to root rot, which ultimately killing the plants in the jar. Thus, we would want the excess water to escape into this layer so that the soil has a chance of getting dry in mid of watering sessions. Of course, water your terrarium only once a month or when the plant looks water deprived. Under-watering the terrarium is always better than overwatering.
So what can you do now? Do not further water the terrarium, let the water within this layer evaporate onto the soil layer slowly. Let the plant slowly absorb the water off this layer. With the overwatering, you might potentially get some plants rotting away, remove them immediately if there’s any.

Ever since J² Terrarium started, we have been actively looking for a platform to showcase our terrariums in Brisbane, Queensland. Plenty of options were put on the table, from markets, shop lots, spaces in malls and one caught our attention! Suitcase Rummage at Brisbane city! Its lovely to see the quiet side of the city being turned into a hippie bazaar on a Sunday. And for the first time, J² Terrarium decided to embark its journey to officially make terrariums available for people who would love to share the same passion and love for plants.
In order to start selling terrariums while being a full time student, we decided not to overcommit ourselves and to start up this business at a comfortable pace. So, we figured that Suitcase Rummage will be the most appropriate step to start with! Suitcase Rummage is a small scaled market, simple and yet interesting where you will find many people setting up a mini “stall” with a piece of cloth. As the name suggest, you may bring up to 3 suitcases filled with your goods to sell at Suitcase Rummage! So we thought this would be a good place to start, to test our terrariums on the market! All we need to do is to book our slots for the Sundays, get a pretty mat, and our terrariums!
