How to build a Terrarium
Build your own little garden-in-a-jar with these easy steps.
Materials Provided
-
Gravel (for drainage)
-
Sphagnum moss (for filtration)
-
Soil (for nutrients)
-
Plants (for greenery)
-
Figurine (for decoration)
Step 1: Add the Drainage Layer
Start with a layer of gravel at the bottom of your container.
This helps with drainage and prevents water from sitting at the roots.
Step 2: Add the Filtration Layer
Place a thin layer of sphagnum moss over the gravel.
This acts as a barrier to stop soil from slipping down into the gravel while keeping the layers neat.
Step 3: Add the Soil
Add a layer of soil on top of the sphagnum moss.
This is where your plants will root and grow, so make sure it’s thick enough to cover the roots fully.
Step 4: Planting
-
Use your finger or a small stick to make holes in the soil.
-
Gently place your plants into the holes and cover their roots with soil.
-
Press the soil down lightly to secure them.
Step 5: Decorate
Place your figurine into the terrarium to give it character.
Get creative — you can also adjust the plants to frame the figurine for a natural look.
Step 6: Watering & Care
-
Spray a little water to moisten the soil — not too much!
-
Place your terrarium in a spot with bright, indirect sunlight.
-
Water only ONCE A MONTH.
