Kokedama Workshop
Come and join us for a unique and fun workshop on the Japanese gardening technique of Kokedama!
Service Description
Kokedama is a Japanese gardening technique where a plant’s roots are wrapped in soil and moss, shaped into a ball, and hung with string to create a beautiful indoor plant arrangement. It’s a craft with real roots in Japanese gardening culture, and the hands-on process of shaping and wrapping is surprisingly meditative. Come along, discover the technique with guidance from our experienced instructors, and bring home a living, green creation you’ve shaped entirely by hand! What’s Included: Everything you need for the session is provided, so there’s nothing to prepare or purchase beforehand. Here’s what participants will have access to on the day: - Moss for wrapping - Soil mix suitable for kokedama making - A selection of indoor plants to choose from - String for securing and hanging your moss ball - Tools for shaping and arranging - Expert guidance from our instructors throughout the session How the Session Will Go: The workshop is hands-on from start to finish, and the process is straightforward enough for complete beginners to follow comfortably. 1. Your instructor introduces the Japanese art of kokedama and walks you through the technique before you begin. 2. You’ll select your plant from a variety of available options suited for indoor living. 3. The soil is prepared and shaped around the plant’s roots to form the base of the moss ball. 4. You’ll learn to wrap and mould the moss around the soil, shaping it into a neat, compact ball. 5. String is wound around the moss ball to hold everything together and allow it to be hung or displayed. 6. Your instructor checks your creation and helps you make any final adjustments before you’re done. Caring for Your Kokedama: With a little routine attention, your kokedama will thrive indoors for a long time. - Submerge the moss ball in water for about 10 minutes whenever it feels light or dry to the touch. - Place it in a spot with bright, indirect light rather than direct sun. - Mist the moss lightly every few days to keep the moisture level consistent. - Avoid air-conditioned rooms where the air is very dry, as this affects how well the plant grows. - Trim any yellowing leaves to keep the arrangement looking its best. - Repot or re-wrap the moss ball once a year, or when the plant visibly outgrows its current creation.
