Step-by-Step Guide to Saving a "Dying" Terrarium (Yellowing Plants, Mould, Algae)

Most terrarium problems look worse than they are. A yellowing plant or a patch of white fuzz on the soil surface can feel like a system in collapse, but in the majority of cases, what you are looking at is a recoverable situation—one that requires diagnosis before intervention, not the other way around.
Before you rush to dismantle the entire setup, don’t lose hope, and work through this guide.
Step 1: Identify the problem accurately
Rushing to fix something without understanding what caused it is how a manageable issue becomes a genuine one. The three most common terrarium complaints— yellowing plants, mould and algae—each point to different underlying conditions, and treating one as another will exacerbate the situation.
Yellowing leaves typically indicate too much light, insufficient light, overwatering or natural shedding. Mould, which usually appears as white or grey fuzzy growth on soil or wood, signals excess moisture and insufficient airflow. Algae, the green or brown film that coats glass and substrate, is almost always a light problem (too much direct sun reaching a moist enclosed environment produces algae reliably and quickly).

Step 2: Check your placement first
Before adjusting watering schedules or pulling plants, move your terrarium if necessary. The majority of common terrarium problems trace back to placement. Direct sunlight through glass heats the interior rapidly, accelerates moisture evaporation in open terrariums and drives algae growth in closed ones. Meanwhile, an air conditioning vent nearby will stress moisture-loving plants and dry out substrate inconsistently.
Bright, indirect light and a stable ambient temperature resolve a surprising number of issues on their own. Relocate the terrarium, give it a week and reassess before taking further action.
Step 3: Address yellowing plants
If relocation does not resolve yellowing within a week or two, examine the plant itself. Check whether the yellowing is isolated to older, lower leaves—this is frequently natural shedding as the plant redirects energy to new growth, and requires no intervention whatsoever. If the yellowing is spreading to newer leaves or affecting the whole plant, however, the issue is more systemic.
For closed terrariums, overwatering is the most likely culprit. Open the lid, allow the substrate to dry slightly and hold off watering entirely for two weeks. For open terrariums, check the opposite: if the soil is bone dry and pulling away from the vessel edges, the plant is dehydrated. In this case, water slowly and thoroughly, allow full drainage and monitor over the following week. If a plant is fully yellow, mushy at the base or showing root rot when gently removed from the substrate, remove it cleanly before the decay spreads to neighbouring plants.
Step 4: Deal with mould
Surface mould on soil or decorative wood is common in new closed terrariums and is not necessarily a sign of failure. In the first four to six weeks, a newly built closed terrarium is still finding its equilibrium. Moisture levels fluctuate, organic matter settles and mould often appears temporarily before the system stabilises.
If the mould is surface-level and limited in spread, remove it manually using a long pair of tweezers or a cotton swab, then open the lid for a few hours on a dry day to release excess humidity. If mould is persistent and recurring across multiple areas, the terrarium is holding too much moisture. Check that your drainage layer (the gravel or leca beneath the substrate) is adequately deep and that water is not pooling above it.
Bonus: Adding a small colony of springtails at this stage is one of the most effective long-term solutions available. They feed directly on mould and fungal spores and will regulate the problem biologically without any ongoing effort from you.
Step 5: Clear algae from the glass
As mentioned before, algae on the interior glass is primarily a light issue. Begin by reducing light exposure by moving the terrarium away from its current position or reducing the hours it receives artificial light if you are using a grow lamp. For cleaning, a long-handled soft brush or a folded piece of paper towel on the end of a chopstick works well for reaching interior surfaces without disturbing the plants. Wipe the affected glass clean, then address the light conditions to prevent recurrence.
Green algae on the substrate surface itself is trickier. A thin green film on the soil is largely harmless, though unsightly. Gently scraping the top layer and replacing it with a thin covering of fresh substrate or decorative moss makes for a clean solution. Persistent substrate algae in a closed terrarium almost always means the setup is receiving too much direct light, and unfortunately, no amount of cleaning will resolve it without fixing the source.
Step 6: Introduce a cleanup crew
Once the acute issues are resolved, consider introducing isopods and springtails to prevent recurrence. This is the step most hobbyists skip and later regret. A bioactive cleanup crew handles the organic waste, mould and fungal growth that inevitably accumulates in any enclosed, living environment. They do not eliminate the need for occasional maintenance, but they reduce it considerably and address problems at the source before they become visible.
The best part? These critters are self-regulating. That means their populations rise and fall based on the amount of available food and organic waste in the terrarium, so they rarely overpopulate or require active management from you.
When to Start Over

If more than half the plants are affected, the substrate smells of rot when disturbed or you are finding mould deep in the drainage layer rather than on the surface, a full rebuild is the more practical option. Remove and clean the vessel thoroughly, replace the substrate entirely and treat it as an opportunity to build the system better the second time around.
A struggling terrarium is rarely beyond saving. More often, it is a setup that was built with one or two variables slightly off—and those variables, once corrected, allow the whole system to rebalance.
