Comparing Preserved and Dried Flowers for Decoration

Not every beautiful thing needs to be replaced every week. That’s part of why preserved and dried flowers have become such a reliable choice for decoration, whether for a home shelf, an event setup or something handcrafted and meant to last.
Both are real flowers. Neither needs water. But they’re not the same thing, and treating them as interchangeable leads to disappointing results. The differences in texture, longevity, cost and best use are worth knowing before you commit to either.
Preserved Flowers
A preserved flower looks almost exactly like a fresh one. That’s the whole point.
The process involves cutting flowers at full bloom, then slowly replacing the plant’s natural sap with a glycerin-based solution. What comes out the other side is a petal that’s still soft to the touch, still flexible, still carrying that slight weight that fresh flowers have. It just no longer needs anything to stay that way.
Colour is one of the bigger advantages. Some preserved flowers keep their original hues. Others are treated with dyes during the process, which opens up a wider range: deep navy blues, burnt oranges, soft champagnes, even metallics. This is why preserved flower arrangements can look so deliberate and considered. The colour options go well beyond what nature offers on its own.
Roses are the most commonly preserved variety, though hydrangeas, peonies and cotton flowers also hold up well through the process.
Under good conditions, preserved flowers last one to three years, and good conditions include staying dry. Humidity is the main thing that breaks them down, so bathrooms, kitchens and any spot near condensation are out. Direct sunlight is also a problem. UV exposure fades the colour over time, even if the structure stays intact. And to be clear, they should never be watered or misted!
One more thing worth knowing upfront is that preserved flowers generally cost more than dried ones. This is because the treatment takes time and materials, and the price reflects that.
Dried Flowers
Dried flowers are exactly what they sound like. Moisture is removed from a fresh bloom through air drying, pressing or silica gel and what’s left behind is a lighter, more textural version of the original. There are no chemicals involved, just dehydration.
The colour change is part of the identity. Dried flowers don’t stay as vivid and shift into quieter, more muted territory that come in dusty pinks, warm creams, faded lavenders and pale straw yellows. For a lot of interior styles, this is actually the appeal. For rustic spaces, minimalist shelves and bohemian arrangements, dried flowers fit naturally into all of them because the palette is warm and understated rather than bright and bold.
Pampas grass, lavender, baby’s breath and strawflowers are among the most popular varieties, largely because they hold their shape well through drying. They’re also widely available and significantly more affordable than preserved flowers. Some people dry their own at home, which adds a personal element to the arrangement.
The tradeoff is fragility. Once dried, petals become brittle and shed easily if handled too much. They’re better suited to spots where they’ll be admired rather than touched, like a shelf, display corner or frame that won’t be moved around.
Side-by-Side
Feature | Preserved Flowers | Dried Flowers |
Appearance | Lifelike, vibrant | Muted, vintage |
Texture | Soft and flexible | Brittle and papery |
Lifespan | 1-3+ years | 1-3 years |
Maintenance | Keep dry, avoid humidity | Minimal, handle gently |
Cost | Higher | Lower |
Best For | Premium décor, gifting, events | Rustic styling, crafts, home décor |
Eco-Friendliness | Uses chemicals | Fully natural process |
One isn’t better than the other. They’re suited to different things, and the right choice depends on context.
Which Works Where
For formal events, corporate functions, curated dinners and product launches, preserved flowers hold up better. They stay consistent across multi-day setups, photograph cleanly and carry a finished quality that reads well in professional settings. They also make strong gifts because the longevity gives them value beyond just looking good.
Dried flowers feel more at home in informal, creative settings. Think craft workshops, casual event tables and home spaces where the overall aesthetic is warm and organic. Their texture and natural imperfections give them a character that’s genuinely hard to replicate with preserved flowers.
Practical Care Tips
Preserved flowers:
Keep in a dry room with good airflow
Away from direct sunlight and humidity sources
Never water or mist them
Dust with a soft brush, don’t wipe
Dried flowers:
Avoid kitchens, bathrooms and other high-moisture spots
A light coat of hairspray reduces shedding
Arrange in clusters rather than single stems for more visual impact
If they feel very brittle, let them sit somewhere slightly less dry for a day before arranging
Using both in the same arrangement can work well. Preserved flowers carry the colour and focal weight, while dried flowers fill in with texture around them. Together, they tend to balance out more naturally than either does on its own.
In Summary

Preserved flowers suit contexts where appearance and longevity matter most: formal events, premium gifting and display pieces that need to hold up over time. Dried flowers suit spaces and projects where a natural, organic aesthetic is the goal and budget is a consideration.
Both are worth understanding before you start using them. The material knowledge makes the difference between an arrangement that looks intentional and one that just looks assembled.
In addition to our popular terrarium and kokedama workshops, J2 Terrarium also runs preserved floral workshops in Singapore, including the Preserved Floral Garden Workshop and Preserved Floral Wood Frame Workshop. Designed for general participants and corporate sessions, they offer a hands-on way to work with preserved blooms under the guidance of experienced facilitators. Bookings are open—select from one of our dates or arrange a private session with us personally!
